How to Cultivate a Passion for God’s Word

I often hear these words from women: “I want to study the Bible, but I don’t know where to start, and I find it confusing.”

I hear you.

I’ve been you.

Seventeen years ago, God forced me into a season of slow. He plucked me out of my life and placed me on seven weeks of strict bedrest in the hospital while waiting for the birth of our first child. It was then that I picked up my dusty Bible and began to read. I didn’t understand it—not at first—but over time, as I kept studying and asking questions from women much smarter than me, I began to put the pieces together and God’s Word sprang to life.

My passion for the Bible has multiplied over the years. But it hasn’t come without discipline and perseverance. Studying God’s Word takes time. Bit by bit. Line upon line. It takes effort and endurance. Theological understanding is formed over years of patient and diligent study.

HOW CAN YOU GROW YOUR LOVE FOR GOD’S WORD?

  1. Establish a habit. Pick a time for when and where you will read your Bible each day. Set yourself up for success by preparing the space, gathering the tools, and eliminating distractions. Be consistent with the place and time of day, and before you know it, a habit will be formed.

  2. Make a plan. Decide in advance what and how you will read. You can choose to make your way through a book of the Bible one chapter at a time. Perhaps you want to follow a Bible reading plan. There are thousands to choose from online. Maybe you want to journal about what you read, or you could choose one verse to write down and carry with you throughout the day. Regardless of how you structure your time in God’s Word, make a plan and stick to it.

  3. Ask God to give you a love for His Word: This is essential. As you are faithful to open God’s Word every day, ask God to multiply your passion for the Scriptures. He loves to answer these prayers. You will find that what starts as duty, quickly turns to delight. The more you read it, the more you will want to read it. Since the Bible is alive and active – God’s very breath on the page – it opens the eyes of your heart to who He is, and it will absolutely transform your life. The Holy Spirit will be faithful to give you a hunger for God’s Word that propels your life-long pursuit of Christ.
