10 Bible Verses About Fear

The Bible commands us not to fear. Again and again, Scripture repeats, "Do not be afraid." Of course, that's easy to say and much harder to do.

God doesn't tell us not to be afraid because there is nothing in this world to fear. The reality is, there are scary, even terrifying things, in our broken world that cause us to shake in our boots and lie awake at night. God knows there are legitimate fears in our world.

But God instructs us not to fear because He is with us. His presence is the single factor that drives out all fear. His power and goodness, His love and grace, are far greater than our fears. We are invited to hide beneath the shadow of His wings and find refuge.

If you are struggling with persistent fear, here are 10 Bible verses that will help you look to God in the face of fear:

2 Timothy 1:7

For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but one of power, love, and sound judgment.

Isaiah 41:10

Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid, for I am your God. I will strengthen you; I will help you; I will hold on to you with my righteous right hand.

1 John 4:18

There is no fear in love; instead, perfect love drives out fear, because fear involves punishment. So the one who fears is not complete in love.

Joshua 1:9

"Haven’t I commanded you: be strong and courageous? Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

Psalm 34:4

I sought the Lord, and he answered me and rescued me from all my fears.

Psalm 46:1-3

God is our refuge and strength, a helper who is always found in times of trouble. Therefore we will not be afraid, though the earth trembles and the mountains topple into the depths of the seas, though its water roars and foams and the mountains quake with its turmoil.

Deuteronomy 31:6

Be strong and courageous; don’t be terrified or afraid of them. For the Lord your God is the one who will go with you; he will not leave you or abandon you.

Psalm 56:3-4

When I am afraid, I will trust in you. In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?

Psalm 27:1

The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom should I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life—whom should I dread?

John 14:27

Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Don’t let your heart be troubled or fearful.
